Currently, chemical engineering researchers have to propose tools to support design in order to be consistent with today's economic cycles and industrial constraints. One way to accelerate the design is to use past experiences as starting point (because some choices or decisions are not to do or to question) and then to adapt and enhance them further. For this adaptation step new experts' knowledge is often mandatory to modify the past solution. In this paper we propose a coupling between two knowledge based methods: Case Based Reasoning and Constraint Satisfaction Problem to accelerate preliminary design by on line knowledge acquisition during problem solving episodes
