We discuss the segregation of mass by vorticity in two-dimensionnal turbulence. We start from a collection of randomly distributed vortices spanning a scale range and such that they mimick the standard 2D turbulence energy spectrum. The density field exhibits a bimodal pdf and the characteristic length scale of the mass inhomogeneity is of the order of the large vortices radius. Relaxation of these initial fields is inspected from the joint pdf of vorticity and density. We explain the mass-segregation mechanism in the light of the Rayleigh-Taylor instability of the heavy vortex and the influence of radial density stratification on the merger distance.
