In this paper, we set out our arguments for a new approach to control electrical distribution networks making them more robust and flexible and giving them the ability to adapt themselves to the evolution of the way we consume and produce electricity. In the first part of the paper, the current state of the distribution network is presented as well as the motivations to move from classical control strategies to innovative ones. Then, the concept of Smart Grid and the associated challenges are presented. Finally, the Adaptive Multi-Agent System approach is exposed as well as the benefits it can have for the Smart Grid.
