Well established airplane design methodologies such as the ones by J. Roskam and D. Raymer are not applicable to highly integrated airframe-engine sys- tems like Boundary Layer Ingestion (BLI) airplanes; in order to employ such methodologies, they need to be adapted to take into account properties of BLI air- planes. The article details one such new approach to airplane design methodologies, and focuses on preliminary sizing phase of the design. While taking existing methodologies as starting point, it is adapted to airplane architectures with partial or complete BLI propulsion. It takes up existing methodologies and in- troduces three additional parameters taking into ac- count the effect of BLI on: airplane lift-to-drag ratio, fuel burn and the engine weight. The impact is evaluated as a function of the new parameter alpha, which is introduced to describe the ratio of BLI thrust to the total cruise thrust. The resulting model fits the B737-800 preliminary sizing parameters and deter- mines new parameters adapted to a given BLI tech- nology.
