This work concerns the use of a molten fluoride mixture for the electrodeposition of silicon, in the frame of the recovery of this element from wastes containing also iron. The text is divided in three parts: the first is devoted to the electrochemical behavior of Si in molten alkali or earth alkali fluorides and the role of the solvent cation for the stability of the Si compound SiF4 in the fluoride solution; the eutectic mixture NaF-KF is among the best solutions to avoid SiF4 release from the bath. In the second part, the best conditions of electrodeposition are defined from nucleation studies and investigations on the temperature, current density and cathodic substrate effect. Finally, the third part describes the electrolytic separation of Si from a Si-Fe compound, with a mechanism proposition and results on: (i) the perfect purity of the recovered silicon and (ii) the anodic and cathodic efficiency, both close to 100%
