A satellite system is presented dedicated to aeronautical applications: Air Traffic Services (ATS) and In-Flight Entertainment (IFE) services. The air interfaces rely on DVBS2/RCS standard and use Ka-band frequencies. The main challenge is to achieve an efficient convergence of heterogeneous traffics while ensuring differentiated Quality of Service (QoS). The study is focused on the return link (from aircraft to terrestrial network). Two designs have been investigated for the aircraft terminal. The first one is derived from ETSI BSM (Broadband Satellite Multimedia) architecture based on a layering paradigm. A cross-layer technique is introduced in order to control load for IP traffic for IFE. The second proposed design uses Generic Stream Encapsulation (GSE). GSE meets DVB-S2 forward link requirements; its applicability to the return link is addressed in the paper. GSE design outperforms the first one leading to better resource utilization and satisfactory performances.
