Many types of structural faults (cracking, delamination, etc) will cause changes in the measured dynamic response of a structure and also influence identified modal parameters. Estimation of damping and mode shape in structural control often poses a difficult problem especially in Structural Health Monitoring algorithm. As a first example we can underline two different methods of mode shape reconstruction (cubic and Kriging) function of placement sensors and number of sensors. Secondly we study the robustness and the accuracy of the damping ratio estimation for 3 different methods: Rational Fraction Polynomial, Continuous Wavelet Transform and Least Square Complex Exponential. In fact damping estimation is mainly affected by Signal to Noise Ratio and damping level. Our supervised analysis on synthesized FRF coupled with a Design Of Experiments highlights that the frequency based method is the more reliable for damping estimation.
